Medicare Part A is often called hospital insurance because it helps cover care you receive in a hospital or similar setting. It’s one of the two parts that make up Original Medicare.
Part A typically covers:
If you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years (40 quarters), you’ll likely qualify for premium-free Part A. If not, there may be a monthly premium, depending on how long you contributed to the system.
Part B helps pay for the kind of care most of us use regularly like doctor visits, outpatient tests, and preventive services. It works alongside Part A to complete your Original Medicare coverage.
Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B. For many, it’s a standard rate, but those with higher incomes may pay a bit more. If you’re not sure where you fall, we can walk you through it.
Also known as Medicare Advantage, Part C is an alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you’re still part of Medicare, your benefits are just managed through the plan instead of directly through the government.
Every Medicare Advantage plan must include all the coverage you’d get under Parts A and B. Many also offer extra features, such as:
