The “ABC’s” of Medicare

What Do Medicare Parts A, B, and C Actually Cover?

Medicare has several parts, and understanding what each one does is the first step to choosing the coverage that fits your needs. While the program can seem complex at first, breaking it down into smaller pieces makes it much easier to understand.

Below, we’ll walk you through what each part (A, B, and C) covers and how they work together to protect your health and finances.

Medicare Part A: Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part A is often called hospital insurance because it helps cover care you receive in a hospital or similar setting. It’s one of the two parts that make up Original Medicare.

Part A typically covers:

  • Inpatient hospital stays
  • Short-term care in a skilled nursing facility (not long-term custodial care)
  • Certain home health services, when medically necessary
  • Hospice care

If you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years (40 quarters), you’ll likely qualify for premium-free Part A. If not, there may be a monthly premium, depending on how long you contributed to the system.

Medicare Part B: Medical Insurance

Part B helps pay for the kind of care most of us use regularly like doctor visits, outpatient tests, and preventive services. It works alongside Part A to complete your Original Medicare coverage.

  • Visits to your doctor
  • Outpatient surgeries and procedures
  • Lab work and diagnostic imaging
  • Screenings and preventive care (like flu shots and cancer checks)
  • Mental health services
  • Medical equipment (like wheelchairs or glucose monitors)
  • Ambulance transportation
  • Certain outpatient prescription drugs, like injections given in a doctor’s office

Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B. For many, it’s a standard rate, but those with higher incomes may pay a bit more. If you’re not sure where you fall, we can walk you through it.

Medicare Part C: Medicare Advantage

Also known as Medicare Advantage, Part C is an alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you’re still part of Medicare, your benefits are just managed through the plan instead of directly through the government.

Every Medicare Advantage plan must include all the coverage you’d get under Parts A and B. Many also offer extra features, such as:

  • Prescription drug coverage (Part D)
  • Dental, vision, and hearing benefits
  • Wellness perks like gym memberships or over-the-counter allowances
  • Financial protection through an annual out-of-pocket maximum

There are several types of Medicare Advantage plans available, including:

  • HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)
  • PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)
  • PFFS (Private Fee-for-Service)
  • SNP (Special Needs Plans)
  • MSA (Medical Savings Account) plans

Benefits and provider networks can vary by plan and location, which is why it’s helpful to compare your options with guidance. We are here to help you every step of the way with any questions you have, and as always, our services are 100% free of charge to you!

Which Medicare Path Is Right for You?

Choosing between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage depends on what matters most to you; flexibility, provider access, costs, and coverage extras.

Some people value the freedom to see any provider who accepts Medicare and choose Original Medicare along with a Medigap (Supplement) plan and standalone drug coverage. Others prefer the convenience of an all-in-one Medicare Advantage plan that bundles coverage with extra benefits.

There’s no single “right” answer, and you don’t have to figure it out alone. We’re here to talk through your needs and help you decide what’s right for you. On your timeline, without pressure.
